With Ultima I want to make sure there will be designers, writers and artists after me as well. When you work on a big IP, say Warhammer, LOTR or Batman, you know that there are designers, writers and artists that came before you. Another thing that I wanted to do, aside from touching on an ethical system, was to take Ultima and keep it going. That and the world of Ultima, which is much beloved, including in the online game, which still has an active community. The virtue system.įlack: That's our touchstone. He said he wanted to acknowledge that and, for me, that's the main thing that Ultima IV did. Even in games like Zelda you'd just walk into a house and steal from a chest. RPS: There was an interview with Richard Garriott from a long time ago, where he said that one of the main inspirations for Ultima IV was the realisation that so many things that you did in RPGs, including the original Ultima trilogy, were bad things. I wanted to do something that was as subversive, as interesting, as deep.something that could ask as many questions as Ultima IV. It was the first game to really tackle ethics. If you think about Ultima IV, the time it came out, 1985, it was fairly cutting edge in terms of technology and massively high concept. What I'm interested in doing is taking the effect and the intent behind Ultima IV and then applying that to a game. We're not here to remake exactly the experience you had in Ultima IV. It's a subtle distinction but an important one. RPS: Are you comfortable talking about Ultima Forever as a remake of Ultima IV? That's where you're looking back to, right?įlack: I like to think of it as less of a remake and more of a reboot. Should be obvious but just to be clear, the Honesty and Honor cards are from Ultima IV as are the two images following that. Beta signups are open now and I might be eating my words and going back to Britannia after all. I also managed to peek at a trailer showing the similarities between Forever and IV with transitions into the new visuals, an example of which is below.

To learn more I spoke with lead designer Kate Flack and found that Ultima Forever could be a virtuous project, emphasising character development over looting, moral quandaries over monster-bashing and more interested in tracking player behaviour than spending patterns.
#ULTIMA ONLINE FOREVER DUNGEON WORD OF POWER FREE#
And now you have an entire new map to explore and feel like an utter noob again. When I heard that there would be a free to play Ultima game, my knee jerked so hard that I fractured my leg in four places. Before you know it, your not missing West Brit Bank because Prevalia Bank is basically the same thing. Originally I wanted to visit west Brit bank, I wanted to mine in Minoc because this is UO to me.

I hesitated before joining Outlands because it is on a new map. To this day I am still trying to put down my PvM character to get into the PvP scene, but have been unsuccessful. However, I got sucked in by PvM and character progression, which you can really get into the minute details to fine tune your characters playstyle. I joined Outlands with the sole intent of PvPing. I was a die hard PvPer my entire UO history. To me, this is where the game should have gone (instead of the AoS path with items and artifacts where it seems EA was trying to replicate WoW). Their PvM content and added character progression paths really give A LOT to do. I don't think any other server can make this claim, mind you I want all UO servers to be successful because, looking at the big picture, we are all just kids again trying to play some kick-ass UO.Īnd, there is a reason Outlands has such a high population. I really don't know where I could go on the Outlands server and not stumble across another person. To play UO in all its glory you need a large population so you run into the elite players, the noobs, the scammers, the PKs, the PvP dudes, the thieves, the griefers, the helpful folks, etc. My interpretation of what your are asking pretty much knocks out all but a handful of a few servers with Outlands far, far, far ahead of the select few remaining. Basically I want to play a game where I feel I am in an active world and not alone. When I think of UO in its glory days I think of a booming real estate market, a healthy and active economy, new areas to explore (in the glory days it was all new to me), hiding from murderers, running form thieves as well as an active PvP and PvM scene. go hop in their discord channel and see how active it is for yourself. Hi OP, if you are looking for "UO in its glory days the way it was meant to be played" there is one server that is far ahead of the rest: UO Outlands.
